{February 27, 2009}   Go Interns!!!

The Legislators are back into the swing of things again this past week. Senator David Givens schedule was constantly booked. As Ag committee chair he decides what bills he will hear and sponsors a number of them as well for instance in the Ag committee this past thursday he had sponsored three bills. One of these three bills was the Intern bill that Senator David Williams has started. This is a way to get the interns involved in the legislative process. The Intern bill that was presented in this committee dealt with KY proud products and keeping a log of there distribution to determine the consumption. This bill passed sucessfully through the committee. But the intern bill that was introduced to the Education committee ended up being grilled by some of the members. This bill pertained to Keys money for Home School children. I believe this is one example of how important a committee chair is, without there support you are bound to fail or at least get criticized.

Another substancial thing that happened this week was the beginning of constituent backlash over the increase of taxes on alcohol and cigarettes. Senator Givens being from a rural area has begun to get some grief for his support of this legislation. He even had a child who was in 8th grade quiz him on why he supported it. this legislation is going to be a abide divider of the House and the Senate.
